Budgeting
Budgeting that survives a real month
Money you don't spend this month is still yours next month — and you'll know you're close to a limit before you cross it, not after.
No credit card required
Rollover
Money you don't spend doesn't vanish
Come in under on groceries and that money is waiting for you next month — a Refill budget refills instead of resetting.
Parent & child budgets
"$1,100 for food." Does that include restaurants, or not?
Both answers are legitimate, so you say which: a restaurants budget can be a sub-limit inside your food budget, or an amount that sits on top of it.
Recurring budgets
Next month is already set up when you get there
Budget your groceries once and every month arrives with the number already in place.
Overspend
Go over, and you decide what happens next
Spend more than you budgeted and the difference comes out of next month: June ran $36 over, so July's $90 budget opens at $54. If you'd rather start fresh, you can choose that instead — June's overspend stays in June and July opens at the full $90.
Common questions
- Does money I don’t spend roll over to next month?
- On a Refill budget, yes — what you don’t spend is added to next month’s amount. Choose Fixed instead and the budget resets to the same number every month.
- Will I know before I go over a budget?
- Yes. Pick the point you want to hear about — 80% by default — and you get an email when a budget crosses it, and again if it reaches 100%.
- How do I budget for an annual bill, like insurance or car registration?
- Budget the monthly share of it and let the overspend carry. Set a $300 Refill budget for a $3,600 yearly premium: it builds up quietly for eleven months, then drops deep into the red in the month the bill lands and climbs back at $300 a month.
- Can I use budgets without connecting a bank?
- Yes. Import a CSV from your bank or add transactions by hand — budgets track whatever is in your account. Connecting a bank just saves you the typing.
- How deep can categories nest?
- One level. Categories have subcategories, and that’s where it stops — you can budget Food & Dining and Restaurants inside it, but not a third level below that.
