Frequently Asked Questions

How is net worth calculated?

Add up everything you own and subtract everything you owe. Assets include cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, property, and vehicles. Liabilities are the balances outstanding today on mortgages, loans, and credit cards, not the amounts originally borrowed.

Why does the Canadian version list different accounts?

Because the accounts people actually hold differ. Canadians track TFSA and RRSP balances and often a line of credit, while Americans track 401(k) and IRA balances. Offering the wrong list means relabeling every row before you can start, so switching the country changes the lines and the currency shown.

Should I include my home in my net worth?

Most calculations do, with the mortgage counted as a liability against it, so what remains is your equity. Some people prefer to exclude property on the grounds that they do not intend to sell it. Either approach can work as long as you stay consistent, since the useful figure is the direction it moves over time.

Is a negative net worth a problem?

It is common rather than alarming, especially early on with student loans or a recent mortgage. A single figure says less than its direction does. Recording it on the same day each month tends to be more informative than the number you get today.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved. Closing the page clears it, which also means you will want to record the figure somewhere if you plan to track it month to month.
