Frequently Asked Questions

What is a budget Sankey diagram?

A chart where the width of each band is proportional to an amount of money. Income enters on the left, joins in the middle, and splits on the right into what you spend and what is left over. Because widths add up exactly, one glance shows which costs take the largest share, which a list of numbers makes you work out.

Should I put savings and investments in "Money out"?

Usually not. Anything you do not spend already appears as "Left over", so money you move into savings or an investment account shows up there on its own. List a savings transfer as spending only if you want the diagram to show your plan rather than what is truly left, and remember it will then no longer appear as left over.

What does "Shortfall" mean?

It appears when spending is higher than income. The difference had to come from somewhere, usually savings or a credit card, so the diagram adds it as its own input on the left. Keeping it visible, rather than letting the middle column quietly exceed your income, is the point of the chart.

Why are some of my lines grouped into "Other"?

When two or more lines are each under 2% of income they would be drawn as hairlines too thin to read, so they are combined into one "Other" band with a count. A single small line keeps its own name. The table under the diagram still lists everything you entered at its full value.

Should I use monthly or yearly amounts?

Either works as long as every line uses the same period. Monthly is easier to fill in from a bank statement. Yearly is better when you have large irregular costs such as insurance premiums or property tax, which a single month either leaves out or exaggerates.

Is my data stored anywhere?

Your budget labels and amounts are processed only in your browser and are cleared when you close the page. The PNG is created on your device too. If you use the optional signup form, the name and email address you submit are sent to WealthMode.
